What warning did the IMD give out?

Issuing a warning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the mercury could soon cross the 40-degree mark. According to the IMD, temperatures in the Delhi-NCR region could exceed 40 degrees Celsius this weekend, leading to conditions of intense heat.

Additionally, the Meteorological Department has indicated that heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in several parts of the country over the next 48 hours. A detailed analysis of the forecasts issued by the IMD suggests that conditions will become most severe in Central and Eastern India within the next 48 hours as temperatures continue to rise. These regions are likely to experience spells of intense heatwaves. The IMD has stated that heatwave conditions are expected in isolated pockets of Central and Eastern India starting from mid-April 2026. The Meteorological Department has also issued an official warning regarding this.

Where and When to Expect Heatwaves?

According to the IMD's latest forecast, temperatures in the Delhi-NCR region could cross the 40-degree Celsius mark for the first time this season, while in adjoining parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, temperatures could reach between 42 and 43 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has stated that there is a strong likelihood of heatwave conditions in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and its adjoining areas from April 15 to 18; in Central Maharashtra and Marathwada from April 15 to 17; and in isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh from April 16 to 18.

What is the Situation in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh?

According to the Meteorological Department, a heatwave alert has been issued for the interior and certain coastal regions of Odisha from April 15 to 18, while a heatwave is forecast for Chhattisgarh from April 16 to 19. Similarly, in cities such as Nagpur (Maharashtra), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Amravati (Andhra Pradesh), and Bhubaneswar (Odisha), temperatures are likely to rise to between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius by April 16. The IMD has stated that in some areas, the mercury could climb even higher than this. In essence, it is going to feel like June while it is still April.

According to the temperature forecast map released by the Meteorological Department, the mercury could reach between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius in various cities across Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh in the coming days. These cities include Gaya, Patna, Ranchi, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Kharagpur, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Asansol, Bokaro, Durgapur, Kolkata, Bhagalpur, and Siliguri.

In addition to the aforementioned places, temperatures could exceed 42 degrees Celsius in Ujjain, Indore, Bhopal, Sagar, Jabalpur, Akola, Amravati, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Bhilai, Satna, Bilaspur, and Korba. In several regions of Telangana as well, temperatures have already crossed the 43-degree mark. These districts include Khunti, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Simdega, Gumla, Lohardaga, Latehar, Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra, and Seraikela-Kharsawan. In these areas, strong and hot winds during the afternoon hours could cause discomfort and difficulties for the public.

Although there is a possibility of partial cloud cover and isolated light rainfall accompanied by thunder in the northeastern parts of the state on April 17, this is not expected to provide any significant relief from the heat. Dry weather and clear skies are forecast across the entire state starting April 19, which could lead to a further rise in temperatures.
