Weather Report: Rail, hailstorm lash Delhi-NCR, temperature drops several notches

New Delhi: The weather in the Delhi-NCR region has gone through a sudden change. While the afternoon felt warm, clouds gathered in the sky by evening. Strong winds began to blow, and rain started in several areas. Along with Delhi, rain has also been reported in Noida, Faridabad, and Gurugram.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), winds gusted at speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour in Delhi during the evening hours. The rain was accompanied by thunder. Due to the evening showers, traffic on major roads was somewhat disrupted, and commuters faced minor congestion.

The IMD has issued a 'Yellow Alert' for Delhi. This indicates that during the night of Friday and Saturday, the region will experience thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

News agency ANI shared a video on the social media platform 'X'. The footage shows Janpath Road, where heavy rain is currently pouring down.

ANI also shared a video from the India Gate area. People can be seen on the roads, enjoying the pleasant weather; while some are attempting to take shelter from the rain using umbrellas, others are simply getting soaked.

Relief from the Heat, But for How Long?

Over the past few days, Delhi's temperature had hovered around 36–37 degrees Celsius—approximately 2 to 3 degrees above the seasonal average. However, a weather disturbance arriving from the west today has brought about a welcome drop in temperature.

The IMD predicts that temperatures could drop by 3 to 5 degrees over the next three days. Tomorrow—April 4th—the skies are expected to remain cloudy, with a possibility of light rain.

Hailstorm Hits Greater Noida

The weather in Greater Noida took an even more severe turn. In addition to strong winds and rain, hailstones fell in several locations. Hailfall was notably observed in the Dankaur area. This has been an extremely difficult period for farmers. The final phase of the wheat harvest was underway, and crops stood ready in the fields. However, rain and hailstorms flattened everything. Many fields became waterlogged, and the wheat grains were ruined.

What Lies Ahead?

The IMD has issued a warning for rain and strong winds in the Delhi-NCR region for April 3 and 4. Some relief may be expected after April 5, but rain could return again next week.
