Woman Booked For Allegedly Abusing PM Modi During Jantar Mantar Protest

New Delhi: The Noida Police has registered a zero FIR against a woman for allegedly making "objectionable remarks" against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar. The action was taken at Noida's Expressway police station based on a complaint from Ghaziabad lawyer Smriti Singh Chandel. The girl has been identified as Ruchika Singh.

Who filed the complaint?

A complaint has been filed by Smriti Singh, a resident of Ghaziabad on Wednesday at the Noida Expressway police station in Uttar Pradesh against the woman, who is identified as Ruchika Singh, for allegedly making offensive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest at Jantar Mantar on July 23. 

What is there in the complaint?

Based on a complaint by Supreme Court lawyer Smriti Singh, who lives in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, a case has been registered against Ruchika Singh, under the provisions of the BNS 2023. Police have initiated investigation. A video of her making objectionable comments is also claimed to be viral on social media.

According to the complaint, "It is respectfully requested that on 23/7/2026, I received information that Ruchika had gathered at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi and publicly used abusive and objectionable language against the Honorable Prime Minister of India..."

"The said act has not only hurt the dignity of the constitutional post, (but) this act is a symbol of deliberate intention to spread hatred and disturb public peace," the complainant alleged.

The complaint alleged intentional incitement to hatred, social tension, and breach of peace. The accused, Ruchika Singh, has not yet been taken into custody by the police. Police are currently examining video footage and other evidence, and further action will be taken after that.

Lawyer Smriti Singh argued that the Prime Minister's position is linked to the dignity of the nation. He represents the nation, and his objectionable statement has hurt that dignity. This has hurt public sentiments.

What did the police say?

Police are also investigating Ruchika Singh's social media accounts. She also mentioned Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a video and hurled profanity at PM Modi. 

This case is related to the use of abusive language against persons holding constitutional posts in a public place, for this, apart from the sections of the IPC, sections of the Information Technology Act can also be imposed in the law.

What about the protest?

During the student protest at Jantar Mantar, many people used offensive language against Prime Minister Modi. Objections were also raised about banners and posters.

Cockroach Janata Party spokesperson Saurabh Das has objected to the FIR. He considered it a breach of promise and asked the central government why an FIR was being filed when it had been agreed not to. He said that if someone uses derogatory language, they can be sued for civil defamation, but filing a criminal case against the protesters is absolutely wrong.
