New Delhi: An Indian junior women’s hockey team coach has been accused of sexual harassment by a player. The matter reached the Union Sports Ministry through internal reports. Officials treated the information as serious even without a written complaint, and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya ordered a detailed inquiry. The ministry wants clarity on what happened and when, while the coach’s name is kept confidential to protect legal process.

When Did Ministry Step Into Case?

The probe was initiated just days before the team’s departure to Santiago, Chile, for the 2025 FIH Junior Women’s World Cup. Officials felt the issue must not affect the team’s preparation but also should not be ignored. Therefore, an advance investigation has been ordered, and all related departments have been asked to share facts quickly and honestly.

Where Was Incident Allegedly Reported?

Initial inputs suggest the alleged misconduct may have occurred during one of the team's foreign tours. The junior squad travelled in June to Argentina, Belgium and the Netherlands, and later to Australia in September. Authorities are currently reviewing travel logs, room allocation details and team staff records to determine the exact timing and location before further action.

Why Was Player Visiting Coach?

Reports claim that a woman player was seen entering the coach’s room multiple times during an overseas tour. This behaviour drew concern among some officials and support staff. They later informed higher authorities, which eventually brought the matter to the Sports Ministry. Investigators will now speak to everyone present on that trip for their accounts.

Has Any Formal Complaint Emerged?

As of now, there is no official written complaint with the Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India or Hockey India. Still, the ministry considered it serious enough to order a probe. Officials believe player safety must not depend on the presence of a formal letter and that swift action is necessary when risk exists.

What Is Government Saying Officially?

A senior ministry official said the government will avoid hasty judgment and first gather complete information. All individuals involved, including the coach and the informer, will be contacted confidentially. Names have not been disclosed to avoid pressure. Sports bodies have also been reminded to ensure safe environments for female athletes at all times.

Will Probe Protect Future Women Players?

The inquiry is expected to check if warning signs were overlooked earlier. Findings may lead to stricter monitoring during tours, regulated room access and improved complaint procedures. Strong internal committees could also be recommended. Officials believe the outcome will reinforce that no form of harassment will be tolerated in Indian sports.
