The fifth day of the second Test match between India and England started late due to rain. This came as a disappointment to Indian fans, with Team India appearing to be in a commanding position to secure a win at Edgbaston. On the final day, England needed 455 runs to win, while Team India needed 4 wickets. This raised the question: If the final day is washed out due to rain and the match ends in a draw, what impact will it have on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table? This question gained importance because if the final day’s play doesn’t happen, the match will end in a draw.
This is the first Test series of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle for both these teams. The first Test match between India and England, where England won by 5 wickets. As a result, England currently has 12 points with a 100% points percentage, placing them second in the WTC 2025-27 points table.
Now, if the Edgbaston Test ends in a draw, England will have 16 points with a 66.67% points percentage, and they will remain in second place. As for Team India, they lost the first match, so they currently have 0 points. If the second Test against England ends in a draw, India will get 4 points, with a points percentage of 16.67%, and will remain in fifth place. Although India’s account will open, they will miss out on a full 12 points that a win would have brought.
As per WTC rules, a victory earns a team 12 points, a draw awards 4 points to each side, and a tie results in both teams receiving 6 points.
In the second Test, Team India batted first and scored 587 runs in their first innings, in response to which England posted 407 runs. Team India declared their 2nd innings at 427 for 6. From the Indian side, captain Shubman Gill scored 161, while Rishabh Pant contributed 65 runs, and Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 69. By Lunch Break on Day 5, England had scored 153 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Having won the first Test, they currently lead the five-match series 1-0.
