IPL 2026: Punjab Kings display awesome batting prowess, steamroll Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets

New Chandigarh: The Punjab Kings' winning streak continues in IPL 2026. In their fourth match of the season, Punjab defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 6 wickets. Batting first at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad posted a total of 219 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.

For Punjab, Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and Shreyas Iyer smashed explosive half-centuries. The team clinched the victory in the 19th over, with 7 balls to spare. This marks the Punjab Kings' third win in four matches; one of their matches had ended in a no-result. Meanwhile, the Hyderabad team has now lost three of their four matches.

The Punjab Kings have successfully chased down a target of over 200 runs for the 10th time in the IPL. The Mumbai team ranks second on this list, having achieved this feat six times. The record for the highest successful run-chase in IPL history—a target of 262 runs—also belongs to the Punjab Kings.

How did Punjab perform?

The opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh provided Punjab with an explosive start. Priyansh hit a boundary off the very first ball, and the over yielded a total of 18 runs. From that point on, Punjab never looked back. The team racked up 93 runs within the first six overs. Priyansh completed his half-century in just 16 balls. Immediately thereafter, he was dismissed off a delivery from Shivang Kumar. Priyansh scored 57 runs off 20 balls, an innings studded with 5 boundaries and 5 sixes. Prabhsimran Singh also departed after reaching his half-century; he scored 51 runs off 25 balls. Cooper Connolly could only manage 11 runs off 12 balls.

Following these dismissals, Captain Shreyas Iyer took charge of the innings. Nehal Wadhera joined Captain Shreyas Iyer to forge a 69-run partnership for the fourth wicket off just 35 balls, guiding the team to the brink of victory. Nehal contributed 14 runs to the team's total, after which Shashank Singh (16 not out) provided support to the captain and guided the team to victory with 7 balls to spare. Shreyas remained unbeaten on 69 runs, scored off 33 balls, featuring 5 sixes and an equal number of fours. Shivang Kumar claimed 3 wickets for 33 runs.

Why Did Hyderabad's Middle Order Falter?

After losing the toss and being put in to bat first, Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a blistering start thanks to Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. Together, the duo added 120 runs for the first wicket in just 8.1 overs. Batting in an aggressive manner, Abhishek played a sensational innings of 74 runs off just 28 balls. During this innings, the left-handed batsman struck 5 fours and 8 sixes while playing at a strike rate of 264. Meanwhile, Head contributed 38 runs off 23 balls.

Following the dismissal of these two openers, Hyderabad's run rate dropped significantly. Captain Ishan Kishan failed to capitalize on the strong start and fell victim to Arshdeep Singh after scoring 27 runs off 17 balls. Aniket Verma scored 18 runs off 9 balls. Klaasen took 33 balls to score 39 runs. In the final 5 overs, Hyderabad managed to score only 43 runs. For Punjab Kings, both Arshdeep Singh and Shashank Singh claimed two wickets each.
