New Delhi: Official action has been taken against Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag for a breach of the Code of Conduct during an Indian Premier League 2026 match. He was found guilty of vaping in the dressing room during Match No. 40 of IPL 2026, played against Punjab Kings.

What did the IPL advisory say?

According to an official media advisory issued by the IPL, Parag violated Article 2.21 of the Code of Conduct prescribed for players and team officials, which pertains to conduct that brings the game into disrepute. The incident occurred during the second innings of the match, when Parag was observed using an e-cigarette in the dressing room.

This violation was classified as a Level 1 offense; consequently, 25 percent of his match fee has been deducted as a fine, and one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record. Formal hearings are not required for Level 1 offenses. The advisory also clarified that Parag admitted his error and accepted the penalty imposed by Match Referee Amit Sharma.

What action did the BCCI take?

Given the gravity of the matter, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also considering options for further stringent action to uphold the credibility and discipline of the IPL. It is noteworthy that a ban on the production, sale, and distribution of e-cigarettes has been in effect in India since 2019. In this context, such conduct by a professional cricketer only serves to further fuel the controversy. Although the Rajasthan Royals secured a victory on the field in this match, Parag's lapse has raised questions regarding the team's image. It now remains to be seen whether he can put this controversy behind him through his performance in the upcoming matches.
