New Delhi: The Indian team won the title of T20 World Cup 2026. They defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Many players were talked about after the match, but the story of wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan was the most heart-touching. After the final, Ishaan said that just a day before the match, a big accident had happened in his family. Nevertheless, he came on the field, played a brilliant innings and dedicated the victory to his sister.
Some time ago Ishaan was out of Team India. He had asked for a break in the middle of the South Africa tour, which angered coach Rahul Dravid and selector Ajit Agarkar. The distance from the team management increased. Then Ishaan returned to domestic cricket. He did wonders for Jharkhand in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy—captained the team and scored runs continuously. Because of this performance, he got a chance in the 5-match series against New Zealand. There he scored a century and won the trust of the selectors.
Ishan played all the matches in the entire tournament. He scored a total of 317 runs – with an average of 35.22, strike rate of 193.29. Became the fourth highest run scorer in the tournament. Scored three half-centuries.
He also did wonders in the final – scored 54 runs in 25 balls (4 fours, 4 sixes). He took three catches in wicketkeeping also. Batting first, India scored 255/5 – the highest score so far in a T20 World Cup final.
Ishaan said after the match that a day before the final (on Friday) a big accident happened in his family. His cousin sister and brother-in-law died in a car accident. Both of them were going to a wedding. Her two small children (6 months and 3 years old) survived the accident. Ishaan's father Pranav Pandey was in the mortuary in Siliguri and was about to come to Ahmedabad but stopped after hearing this news. The family was in shock, Ishaan was also very sad, but he controlled himself and decided to take the field.
In the press conference, Ishaan said - "To be honest, my cousin sister died in a car accident yesterday before the match. I played well for her. Talked to Hardik Bhai; he said to keep the team ahead. I dedicate this victory to him. Today is International Women's Day, so it became more special." Ishaan said that his sister always wanted him to score runs. He looked towards the sky while playing his innings – it was for his sister.
Ishaan said that while being out of the team, he stopped thinking too much. He focused only on my work and did not pay attention to things that were not under my control. He gave the example of Virat Kohli—"Virat bhai always says that we should focus on the things that are under our control." When Captain Suryakumar Yadav called and informed him about his return to the team, Ishaan said - "I thought this was for the World Cup. Surya Bhai asked, "Will you win the WC?" I said, "Will you trust?" Then said, "I will."
There is joy in the entire country for the victory, but this story of Ishaan shows how players stand for the team even in difficult times. His hard work and courage made the victory more memorable.
