He also expressed gratitude to fans for their unwavering support throughout his journey.
The big question for cricket fans was why Ashwin, who was still playing competitive cricket, decided to step away from the IPL. In his announcement, Ashwin hinted that his focus has now shifted to new opportunities. He pointed out that “an ending also marks a new start,” suggesting that he intends to participate in T20 leagues around the world. Under BCCI regulations, Indian players must retire from both international cricket and the IPL to be eligible for overseas franchise leagues. He wants to play in them, and for that, retirement from IPL was necessary.
Ashwin’s IPL journey is one of the most consistent and impactful among Indian cricketers. He made his IPL debut in 2009 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and went on to feature in 221 matches across 16 seasons. His journey began with CSK and fittingly ended with the same franchise in IPL 2025. Over the years, Ashwin represented five different teams: Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. Wherever he played, Ashwin made his presence felt with both ball and bat.
The off-spinner claimed 187 wickets in 221 matches, establishing himself as one of the most reliable bowlers in the league. Apart from his bowling, he also contributed valuable runs in the lower order, scoring 833 runs, including one half-century.
