Sports News: ICC chairman Jay Shah revealed Rohit Sharma as the brand ambassador during a high-profile event in Mumbai on November 25, where the official schedule of the tournament was also released. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. This makes Rohit the first active cricketer ever to be appointed as an ICC ambassador. The decision has generated strong excitement among fans and cricket experts globally.
Rohit expressed deep gratitude and said it was a “big privilege” to become an ICC ambassador while still being an active international player. He acknowledged that no current cricketer has held this honour before. In his words, being chosen for this role reflects both trust and respect from global cricket authorities. He added that he hopes to recreate the same magic India delivered during the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma remains the only Indian cricketer to win two T20 World Cup titles—first in 2007 under MS Dhoni’s leadership, and then in 2024 as captain. His 2024 triumph against South Africa in Barbados also ended India’s 11-year wait for an ICC trophy. Rohit retired from T20 international cricket immediately after winning the 2024 title, along with Virat Kohli. He currently plays only ODI cricket after stepping away from Tests in May 2024.
Reflecting on his career, Rohit said that winning ICC titles is extremely challenging and emotionally demanding. He mentioned his personal 18-year journey and the drought period where India repeatedly fell short. He highlighted how the entire team's determination finally paid off in 2024. According to him, these victories bring immense happiness not only to players but also to millions of fans across the country.
Rohit noted that he is looking forward to experiencing the tournament from the other side as a viewer. Having played every edition of the T20 World Cup, he said watching from home or stadium will be a unique experience. He also reminisced about witnessing the Indian women’s ODI World Cup triumph from the stands in Navi Mumbai.
India will open their campaign on February 7 against the USA in Mumbai. On February 12, they will face Namibia at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. A high-voltage clash with Pakistan will take place in Colombo next, followed by their final group match against the Netherlands on February 18 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Rohit concluded by saying he hopes the team delivers performances that recall the spirit and passion of the 2024 victory. He believes India has the talent to rise against challenges once again. He also expressed his commitment to promoting the sport and inspiring young cricketers worldwide through his ambassadorial role.
