New Delhi: Former cricketer-turned-expert Sanjay Manjrekar is disappointed that Yashasvi Jaiswal was not selected for the England tour. India is scheduled to play a three-match ODI series in England, for which Jaiswal has not been picked, despite having scored centuries in two of his last three ODIs. His most recent century came against Afghanistan, a match where he had been included in the squad as a replacement for Virat Kohli.
Manjrekar argues that while it is acceptable if the selectors envision Rohit Sharma as part of the 2027 World Cup squad, otherwise, this reflects a long-standing issue within Indian cricket.
"Yashasvi has scored two centuries in his last three ODI matches. He scored an unbeaten 116 against South Africa, followed by scores of four and a century. Any opener in a strong Indian ODI side will get opportunities, and Yashasvi has made the most of them. So yes, it is unfortunate and a bit harsh. If the selectors have picked Rohit, I hope it is because they genuinely view him as part of their plans for the 2027 World Cup," Manjrekar told the media.
Manjrekar added that the BCCI and the Indian team management need to be willing to look beyond big names when necessary.
Manjrekar said, "We are all aware of the culture surrounding players with big names. Decisions are rarely made solely on the basis of cricketing merit. It seems to be the case with Rohit as well. If the selectors believe Rohit is part of the long-term plan, they should state that. However, if he is being selected simply because they are reluctant to drop him, it highlights a problem that has plagued Indian cricket for years. Selection should never be about what is best for Virat, Rohit, or Bumrah; it should always be about what is best for Indian cricket."
The former Indian star also expressed hope that 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi would perform well in England and Ireland. Manjrekar said, "He has learned a lesson (after the altercation with the Sri Lanka A player). He seems like a very aware and mature lad, and he will handle such situations better in the future."
