Shubman Gill and his bat show no signs of slowing down. Ever since being handed the captaincy of Team India, runs have not just flowed from his bat—they’ve poured like heavy rain. On the England tour, Gill has been in blistering form and has now made history at Edgbaston. After scoring a double century in this Test match, Indian captain Gill followed it up with a spectacular century in the second innings as well. On Day 4 of the Edgbaston Test, Gill came out to bat and played a powerful knock to reach another century. With this, he has become only the second Indian and the ninth batsman in the world to score a double century and a century in the same Test match.
Shubman Gill began this tour and his time as captain with a century in the Leeds Test, and he has maintained his outstanding play at Edgbaston as well. In the first innings of this Test, Gill scored a phenomenal 269 runs, creating history in the process. In Test cricket, he became the captain of India with the best individual score. If anyone thought Gill’s bat would go quiet in the second innings, the star batter proved them wrong by scoring yet another century—an achievement only a few have managed in Test cricket.
On Saturday, July 5, as Team India resumed their second innings on Day 4 of the Test, they lost their second wicket early. That’s when captain Gill walked in and picked up right where he had left off in the first innings. No English bowler could trouble Gill, and in the second session, he reached a memorable century in just 129 balls. This was Gill’s 8th career Test century, third of the series, and fifth overall against England.
