Ahmedabad: India has defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to win the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India thus became the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title. At the same Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, where India's dream of becoming world champions was shattered three years ago, Suryakumar Yadav has led Team India to history.
The Rohit Sharma-led team shattered the hearts of millions of Indians when it was defeated by Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Now, on this very ground, Team India defeated New Zealand to become world champions for the second consecutive time and third overall in the T20 World Cup. Previously, India won the World Cup in 2007 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, in 2024 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, and now in 2026 under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. Batting first in a packed stadium with a capacity of 100,000, India scored 255 runs, the highest score in a World Cup final. Subsequently, they easily stopped the New Zealand team, which was dreaming of silencing the Indian fans. As soon as the Indian team won in Ahmedabad, the entire stadium lit up with lights and fireworks.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner's dream of silencing the crowd in Ahmedabad remained a dream. He hoped that just as Australia, led by Pat Cummins, had silenced the world's largest stadium in the ODI World Cup final thanks to Travis Head's ferocious batting, the Kiwis would do the same. But that didn't happen. While the heartbreaking defeat at the Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19, 2023, may never be erased, India has now put that bitter memory behind them by winning the T20 World Cup on the same ground. Team India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to win the T20 World Cup for the third time. With this, India both repeated history and defeated it. They achieved several feats simultaneously, a first in World Cup history.
For the first time, all three top-order batsmen scored fifty-plus scores. India posted a mammoth total of 255 for 5 against New Zealand in the World Cup final, thanks to blistering half-centuries from Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan, and an explosive 26 from Shivam Dube. Sanju Samson narrowly missed out on a century for the third consecutive match. After scoring an unbeaten 97 in the virtual quarterfinal against the West Indies and 89 in the semifinal against England, he smashed 89 off just 46 balls against New Zealand in the final.
Abhishek Sharma also looked his usual self. Sharma, who had been struggling in every match except the one against Zimbabwe, found his groove in the final. He smashed 52 off 21 balls. Ishan Kishan, who had been performing brilliantly throughout the World Cup, also smashed 54 off just 25 balls. For the first time in T20 World Cup history, three top-order batsmen from a team scored fifty-plus scores. In response, New Zealand's batting collapsed before the lethal bowling of Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel.
The Kiwis were all out for 159 in 19 overs. Thus, India won the T20 World Cup final by a huge margin of 96 runs. Bumrah took four wickets and Axar Patel took three. Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Abhishek Sharma each took one wicket.
India repeated history by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. This marked the first time a team won back-to-back T20 World Cups. For the first time, a defending champion won the T20 World Cup. In 2024, Team India won the World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, and in the next World Cup, i.e., in 2026, that feat was repeated under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav.
In the history of the T20 World Cup, no host country had ever won the trophy. This time, India and Sri Lanka co-hosted the T20 World Cup. This marks the first time a country has lifted the T20 World Cup trophy on its own soil. Just as in 2011, for the first time, a host country won the ODI World Cup. India 'defeated history' in both the T20 and ODI World Cups, changing the history of no host country winning the World Cup.
Team India has won the T20 World Cup for the third time. This marks the first time a team has won the T20 World Cup three times. India first won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, followed by another in 2024, and now again in 2026. India previously held the joint-leading position for most T20 World Cup wins and now holds the sole lead with their third World Cup trophy. Australia and the West Indies have won the T20 World Cup twice each.
Finn Allen and Tim Seifert opened the innings for New Zealand. Shivam Dube dropped a catch off Arshdeep Singh in the fifth ball of the first over. Allen hadn't even opened his account at the time. However, in the third over, Axar Patel dismissed Allen. In the very next over, Bumrah dismissed Rachin Ravindra, who scored only one run. Axar then bowled Glenn Phillips in the fifth over. The Kiwis' score was 47 runs. Meanwhile, Seifert reached his fifty in just 23 balls. Hardik then bowled the eighth over and dismissed Mark Chapman.
New Zealand's biggest blow came from Varun in the ninth over when he dismissed Seifert. Ishan took a brilliant catch. Seifert scored 52 runs. Axar dismissed Daryl Mitchell in the 13th over. Bumrah then bowled Neesham in the 16th over. In the same over, Bumrah also bowled Henry. Then, in the 18th over, Bumrah dismissed Santner. Ultimately, New Zealand were bundled out for just 159. Bumrah took four wickets, while Axar took three.
Earlier, after losing the toss, India scored 255 for five in their allotted 20 overs, the second-highest total in the tournament's history. Abhishek Sharma, who returned to form and has consistently proven to be India's "man-winner," batted explosively. Abhishek, who had struggled with poor form throughout the tournament, scored 52 runs off 21 balls, while Samson scored 89 runs off 46 balls. Samson, who had played brilliant innings against the West Indies and England, silenced his critics with another stellar innings. He hit five fours and eight sixes.
Opener Abhishek finally showcased his talent, putting the New Zealand fast bowlers under pressure. He hit six fours and three sixes in his innings. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner made a mistake in assessing the pitch and missed the team selection. He did not select off-spinner Cole McConchie. Abhishek hit five fours off Jacob Duffy, replacing McConchie. Duffy conceded 42 runs in three overs and went wicketless. Henry conceded 49 runs in four overs, and Hardik Pandya (18 off 13 balls) took one wicket. India had scored 92 runs in the six overs of the powerplay.
Rachin Ravindra broke the 98-run partnership built on 43 balls by dismissing Abhishek in the eighth over. Subsequently, Ishan Kishan (54 off 25 balls) kept the momentum going, hitting four sixes and four fours. Samson and Ishan shared a 105-run partnership for the second wicket in 48 balls to take India past 200. Jimmy Neesham tried to curb India's run rate by dismissing Samson, Ishan, and captain Suryakumar Yadav in the 16th over, but by then, a big score had been reached. Suryakumar remained unbeaten. Shivam Dubey remained unbeaten after scoring 26 runs in eight balls and Tilak Verma remained unbeaten after scoring 8 runs in six balls.
