Ahmedabad: India faced South Africa in the Super 8 match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday. Team India suffered a massive 76-run defeat in the match played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This defeat has dealt a major blow to India's hopes of reaching the semi-finals, as it severely impacted their net run rate.
After winning the toss, South Africa decided to bat first. South Africa scored 187 runs. In response, Team India collapsed for 111. South Africa had made four changes to their team for this match, but the Indian team entered the match unchanged.
In response to 188, Team India had a poor start. Ishan Kishan was dismissed without scoring in the first over. Jansen then dismissed Tilak Varma in the very next over. A big partnership was expected from Surya and Abhishek, but Abhishek disappointed once again. In the 5th over, Jansen dismissed Abhishek. Abhishek scored only 15 runs. India's score was 31-3 after 6 overs. Washington Sundar was then dismissed in the 8th over, scoring only 11 runs. India crossed the 50-run mark in the 9th over.
India's biggest blow came in the 10th over when captain Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed at the score of 51. Surya scored only 18 runs in 22 balls. After 10 overs, India's score was 57-5. In the 15th over, Keshav Maharaj dismissed Hardik and then Rinku Singh. Hardik scored 18 runs, while Rinku could not even open his account. In the same over, Keshav also dismissed Arshdeep, meaning Maharaj took three wickets in one over.
Shivam Dubey did play an innings of 42 runs. But Team India collapsed in the 19th over for 111. This defeat reduced India's run rate to -3.80. This means India will have to win the next two matches by a large margin and also pray that the other teams do not have a better run rate. This defeat has dealt a major blow to India's hopes of reaching the semi-finals. For South Africa, Jansen took four wickets, while Lungi took three and Bosch two.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, De Kock and Markram opened the innings for South Africa. However, Jasprit Bumrah bowled De Kock in the second over. De Kock scored only six runs. Subsequently, Arshdeep dismissed Markram in the very next over. South Africa's score was only 12 runs. Even then, Bumrah's havoc continued. Bumrah dismissed Ryan Rickelton in his second over and the fourth of the innings. Rickelton only scored 7 runs. South Africa were 41-3 after 6 overs.
But then a good partnership developed between Dewald Brevis and David Miller. This partnership was broken in the 13th over by Shivam Dube when he dismissed Brevis. Brevis scored 45 runs in just 29 balls. He and Miller had a partnership of 97 runs. But Miller did not stop there. However, Varun dealt South Africa their fifth blow in the 16th over when he dismissed David Miller. Miller had scored 63 runs in 35 balls. Arshdeep then dismissed Jansen in the 18th over. Then Bumrah took another wicket in the 19th over. However, Stubbs batted well in the end, helping South Africa set a target of 188 runs for India.
Jasprit Bumrah was the most successful bowler for India, taking 3 wickets for just 15 runs in 4 overs. Arshdeep Singh took 2 wickets, while Varun and Dube each took 1 wicket.
