'Transition period not easy, we trust in Gambhir,' says BCCI

The Indian head coach and former Indian opener has faced a lot of criticism lately. India's stats in the red ball format are very poor. Even in the recently concluded test against England, India somehow managed to mount the pressure on themselves.

Sports News: Gautam Gambhir has almost completed an year of being appointed as India's head coach. The slot was open when the former head coach Rahul Dravid had resigned after mentoring India to a T20 World Cup Triumph in Barbados. Gautam Gambhir was not the only contender Alongside him, there was Ricky Ponting, whose offer was rejected by the BCCI, and VVS Laxman, who himself refused to take up the position. Gambhir had won the IPL with the Kolkata Knight Riders last year before being appointed as the head coach.

India under Gambhir

However Gambhir's stint has not been the best since his appointment. Yes, India won the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, but has played some inconsistent cricket throughout. The infamous 2-0  ODI series loss against and in Sri Lanka, a shocking 0-3 test series loss against the Kiwis at home, and the forgetfull Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, which India lost 3-1. Also, many veteran Indian cricketers have retired under Gambhir's tenure. Former skippers and star-batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced shocking retirement from the longest format of the game earlier this summer. Not to forget the legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who announced his retirement during the BGT.

Tough English Test

The Indian head coach and former Indian opener has faced a lot of criticism lately. India's stats in the red ball format are very poor. Even in the recently concluded test against England, India somehow managed to mount the pressure on themselves.  Even after putting runs on the board and four different centurions, India gifted the match in England's hands. A poor bowling performance resulted in India's misery. Gambhir after the match said that he trusts in his captain Gill, after the media critcised him.

BCCI Trusts Gambhir

"At the moment, Gambhir is doing a good job with a young team. In transition, you do not always get the intended results. Australia and England both struggled during their transitions. So, it’s premature to take a call on Gambhir. We still have four Test matches in England, and we are hopeful that we can turn things around. Beyond that, we will see. He (Gambhir) has full trust of the board," a BCCI official told InsideSport.
