New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Padma Shri award upon Rohit Sharma—the legendary Indian batsman and World Cup-winning captain—on June 23. He received this honor in recognition of his outstanding leadership and achievements. The year 2024 proved to be particularly special for Rohit's career; under his captaincy, Team India brought glory to the nation by clinching the T20 World Cup title for the second time. Alongside Rohit Sharma, tennis legend Vijay Amritraj was honored with the 'Padma Bhushan'.
Earlier in May of the same year, Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian women's team, was also honored with the Padma Shri award. Para-athlete Praveen Kumar and K. Pajanivel (for his contribution to traditional martial arts) were also conferred with the Padma Shri at the same time. It is worth noting that the President had announced the Padma Awards in January, selecting nine players from the sports world.
Rohit Sharma is a stalwart of Indian cricket and has made immense contributions to the country. Under his captaincy, the Indian team won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Prior to this, he was also part of the Indian squad that won the Champions Trophy in 2013. Many young people today look up to Rohit Sharma for inspiration. He also displayed excellent leadership during the 2023 ODI World Cup, guiding Team India to the final, although the team ultimately suffered a defeat against Australia in the title clash.
Rohit Sharma displayed magnificent batting form during the 2023 ODI World Cup. He scored runs at an impressive strike rate throughout the tournament, playing a pivotal role in Team India's victories in several matches. He scored a total of 597 runs in this tournament. He was the second-highest run-scorer, trailing only Virat Kohli (765 runs). Prior to this, Rohit had also been in excellent form during the 2019 World Cup; at that time, he scored a record five centuries and topped the charts with 648 runs across nine innings.
