New Delhi: Delhi woke up to thick, choking fog on Sunday, slowing travel across the capital. Dense fog reduced visibility to very low levels across the city, forcing airlines and railways to slow down operations. As a result, hundreds of passengers faced delays and long waits.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 390 around 7 am, placing it in the 'very poor' category.

Why Were Flights Delayed at IGI Airport?

At Indira Gandhi International Airport, more than 200 flights were delayed early in the day as visibility dropped sharply due to dense fog blanketing the region.

Airport officials on Sunday told passengers to check with their airlines before heading to the terminal.

"Operations at Delhi airport continue to be normal. For updated flight schedules, please consult your airline or visit the official airport website. We wish all passengers a safe and pleasant journey," the Delhi airport's advisory on X read.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued an advisory on Sunday, warning that conditions in parts of northern India are making it hard for pilots to land and take off safely.

"Fog conditions in parts of Northern India are affecting visibility and may lead to delays or changes in flight operations at select airports. Passengers are advised to check flight updates with their airlines through official channels and allow extra time for airport travel and formalities," AAI's advisory read.

How Bad Was the Impact on Trains?

The fog also disrupted train services. Northern Railways reported that more than 50 trains were delayed on Sunday because reduced visibility meant drivers had to run trains slower than usual for safety.

At major stations, platforms remained crowded as passengers waited for revised arrival times. Railway authorities have urged passengers to monitor official apps and station announcements.
