New Delhi: After the police action during the CJP protest in Delhi on October 10, there is a possibility of increased unrest in the capital once again on Sunday, October 11. CJP has announced to continue the agitation demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. According to the organisation's leader Ajinkya Shinde, the march will be held at Jantar Mantar at 10 am on Sunday. In view of the demonstration, Delhi Police is on alert and security arrangements have been tightened. Traffic is likely to be affected in many major areas.
In view of the protests on October 10, Delhi Police had deployed heavy security forces in Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas. Barricading was done at several entry points and vehicles were checked. Policemen were also deployed around Mandi House, Supreme Court and ITO metro station. Vehicles were checked at Ghazipur, Tikri, Chilla and Apsara borders. Police made additional arrangements to control the protesters around Connaught Place and Jantar Mantar.
During the demonstration on Saturday, many protesters tried to move towards Connaught Place, after which the police removed and detained them. According to the report, by around 9:21 am, around 150 people had been detained around Jantar Mantar and Connaught Place. Later this number increased. Several leaders including CJP founder Abhijit Dipke, Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka were also detained. Apart from this, some leaders of various opposition parties were also detained by the police.
According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the entry and exit gates of all the stations of the metro network have been opened. Interchange facilities have also been restored. At present no plan has been announced to cancel trains. At the same time, New Delhi Traders Association has announced to keep the markets of Connaught Place open on Sunday. However, traders have been advised to remain alert and pay attention to the security of their shops.
Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory in view of the possible protest and security arrangements on Sunday. Traffic may be affected at around 30 major intersections and roads, including Connaught Place, Mandi House, ITO, Dhaula Kuan, Jhandewalan, Minto Road, Guru Nanak Chowk and Sansad Marg. Diversions and traffic restrictions may be imposed on some routes if necessary. Drivers have been advised to check traffic updates before leaving home and use alternative routes.
CJP has announced to protest again on Sunday. At the same time, news of preparations for a big demonstration by the INDIA alliance on Monday has also come to light. Sonam Wangchuk has also said that he will join the protest if CJP leaders are not released. On the other hand, the United Nations Human Rights Office expressed concern over incidents of mass detentions during demonstrations and appealed to respect the right to peaceful demonstrations.
