New Delhi: With demand for sweets rising during the festive season, the Delhi government's Food Safety Department has intensified inspections to check food adulteration and hygiene violations. Inspections at sweet-making units and retail outlets across the capital revealed shortcomings in cleanliness, storage practices, employee safety and food-handling procedures. Officials also collected samples from several establishments for laboratory testing.
During the inspections, officials recorded deficiencies at Kali Ghata Sweets in Hastasal, Bhikharam Chandmal in Chandni Chowk, Aman Mithaiwala in Narela and Evergreen Sweet House in Okhla.
At Evergreen Sweet House, inspectors found signs of pest activity in the storage area. Employees were also found handling food items without gloves, raising concerns about hygiene and food safety.
Further irregularities were reported at Puri Baker and Bansiwala Sweets in Badli. The shortcomings included issues related to the display of licences, employee training and packaging documentation.
The department also identified hygiene and storage-related shortcomings at Grover Sweet Corner and Meethi Foods in Naraina, as well as Singla Sweets in IP Extension.
In addition, food samples were collected from Chainaram Sindhi Halwai, Haldiram Marketing, Bikanervala and Heera Sweets for quality assessment.
The samples included khoya, rasbhari, barfi, laddoos, peda and other food products. Laboratory testing will help determine whether the sampled items comply with the prescribed food safety standards.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said public health would not be compromised amid festive celebrations. She stressed that food business operators must maintain proper hygiene, ensure safe storage and comply with the prescribed standards.
According to the department, further action will be taken after the laboratory reports are received. The intensified inspections are aimed at strengthening food safety monitoring and protecting consumers during the festive period.
