New Delhi: The suspicious behavior of a teenager arriving with two trolley bags at Delhi's Maharana Pratap Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) caught the police's attention, and a search revealed a large consignment of narcotics. Three packets of cannabis (ganja), concealed within red and parrot-green trolley bags, were recovered; their total weight amounted to 21.360 kilograms. According to the police, this quantity falls under the 'commercial quantity' category. A teenager, aged approximately 17 and a half years, has been detained in connection with the case. Police investigations are now focused on identifying the alleged suppliers and the unknown individual in Delhi who was supposed to receive the consignment.
North District DCP Niharika Bhatt stated that surveillance was being conducted at the Kashmere Gate ISBT around 8:40 PM, acting on a tip-off. During this time, a police officer spotted a suspicious individual carrying two trolley bags. Startled by the police presence, the individual attempted to flee but was apprehended by the alert team. A search of the two bags yielded three packets of cannabis.
According to the police, two packets weighing 7.140 kg and 7.190 kg were found in the red trolley bag, while a single packet weighing 7.030 kg was recovered from the parrot-green bag. Thus, a total of 21.360 kg of cannabis was seized. An FIR (No. 457/2026) has been registered at the Kashmere Gate Police Station under Section 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and an investigation is underway.
During interrogation, the teenager reportedly stated that he had departed for Delhi from Supaul, Bihar, on October 7 aboard train number 04071. According to him, his cousin, Surendra Kumar, had booked the ticket for the journey. Two suspicious individuals were also traveling on the same train. As per the teenager's alleged statement, upon reaching Ghaziabad, these two individuals handed him two trolley bags filled with cannabis and gave him ₹3,500 in exchange for delivering them to Delhi. He was reportedly instructed to go beneath the Karnal Market bridge and contact one of the individuals; the plan involved handing over the consignment to an unidentified person at that location.
According to the police, after arriving in Delhi, the teenager took a rickshaw to the Kashmiri Gate ISBT, where the police apprehended him with the cannabis consignment. Currently, his statements are being verified, and the involvement of other individuals in the case is being investigated.
A special police team was constituted to carry out this operation—based on a tip-off—under the directives of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kotwali) Shankar Banerjee and the supervision of Kashmiri Gate Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Prashant Yadav. The operation was executed by a team led by Sub-Inspector Mukesh Tomar, the in-charge of the ISBT police post. The team included Sub-Inspector Iftikhar, Head Constables Gopal Singh and Vivek, and Constable Gulbir. According to a police press release, Head Constable Gopal Singh spotted the suspect with the two trolley bags while keeping a watch, prompting the team to take swift action.
The police investigation is now focused on identifying the two suspects who allegedly handed over the consignment of cannabis in Ghaziabad and locating the unidentified individual who received it in Delhi. To this end, mobile call records, technical surveillance, details regarding rail travel, and other leads are being examined. The police are working to uncover the entire chain, from the source of the cannabis to its onward distribution. According to the police, the apprehended teenager is a resident of Bihar's Supaul district and has studied up to Class 12. His family background is reported to be linked to agriculture. His alleged contacts and his specific role in the matter are also being investigated.
