Red Alert Issued in Delhi-NCR After Heavy Downpour Triggers Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos

New Delhi: The monsoon hit Delhi and NCR strongly on Tuesday morning. The rain that started early in the morning changed the mood of the weather within a few hours. While people got relief from the humidity and heat that had been prevailing for several days, the heavy rains also slowed down the pace of the city. Roads were flooded in many areas including Central Delhi, due to which office going employees, children reaching school and people doing daily commuting had to face a lot of problems. In view of the situation, the Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the next few hours.

Did a few hours of rain expose the city's preparedness?

As soon as the rains started, pictures of waterlogging started emerging in Connaught Place, Sadar Bazaar, Khan Market and surrounding areas. Long queues of vehicles formed due to waterlogging on many major roads. At some places, two-wheeler drivers had to change routes, while pedestrians also faced a lot of trouble. Local people say that every year big claims are made before the monsoon, but the drainage system seems to respond only in the first heavy rain.

Was traffic and public transport also affected?

Since it was morning, the rain had the greatest impact on traffic. The speed of vehicles slowed down on many routes and public transport services were also affected. School buses arrived behind schedule, while many private vehicles got stuck in waterlogged roads. Office going people also had to face long traffic jams. The traffic police tried to normalise the traffic by deploying additional personnel on many sensitive routes.

Has the Meteorological Department given any further warnings?

Indian Meteorological Department says that monsoon activities in Delhi-NCR will not weaken yet. There is a possibility of intermittent rain for the next few days. There is also a possibility of heavy rain and lightning along with thunder in some areas. The department has appealed to the people to keep an eye on the latest weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather.

Was the effect of rain visible on temperature and wind also?

Due to continuous rain, the temperature in the capital dropped, giving relief to the people from the heat. Despite the increase in humidity in the atmosphere, the morning weather was much more pleasant than before. On the other hand, the positive effect of rain was also visible on air quality. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi's air quality index remains in the satisfactory category, which clearly shows that the rains helped in reducing the dust and pollutant particles present in the air.

Could the problem continue in the coming days?

Looking at the forecast of the Meteorological Department, it is believed that the weather in the capital may remain like this for the next few days. If the rains continue, waterlogging and traffic problems may arise again in low-lying areas. In such a situation, the challenge before the administration will not only be to remove water but also to maintain normal daily traffic. On the other hand, people have been advised to avoid waterlogged roads and follow the warnings of the Meteorological Department.
