New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday inaugurated the Centennial Academic Building, Computer Centre and Skill Development Centre at Daulat Ram College, University of Delhi, reaffirming the government’s commitment to women’s safety, dignity and empowerment. Addressing students, she encouraged young women to pursue their ambitions confidently and assured them that the Delhi government would support their rights and security.

Smart Streetlights and CCTV Cameras to Enhance Security

The Chief Minister announced that work was underway on a plan to install one lakh smart streetlights across Delhi and connect them to a central command-and-control centre. The government is also preparing to install 50,000 additional CCTV cameras to strengthen surveillance and improve women's safety.

These measures are intended to help identify poorly lit areas, improve monitoring and make public spaces safer for women.

Gupta stressed that protecting women should not mean imposing restrictions on their freedom. Instead, she said, society must change its mindset and teach boys and men to respect women.

From College Student to Chief Minister

Reflecting on her association with Daulat Ram College, Gupta recalled that her public life began during her student years, when she became the general secretary of the college students' union.

She said her experience in student politics helped her understand public issues and motivated her to work towards finding solutions. Sharing her journey with the students, she encouraged them to participate actively in public life and remain confident in pursuing their goals.

Self-Defence and Skill Development for Young Women

Students presented self-defence demonstrations during the programme, drawing appreciation from the Chief Minister for their courage and preparation. Gupta encouraged them to speak up against injustice, make their own decisions and develop the confidence to face challenges.

She also highlighted the importance of skill development, technical education and practical training in helping young women become self-reliant. Such opportunities, she said, can equip students with the knowledge and abilities needed to build independent futures.

The event combined the inauguration of new educational facilities with a broader message of empowerment, emphasising that women's safety, equal opportunities and independence must go hand in hand.
