New Delhi: The joy and enthusiasm of Diwali have spread across Delhi and the entire National Capital Region. A large number of people stepped out to purchase diyas, candles, rangoli, decorative items, sweets and puja essentials to illuminate their homes, adding to the festive charm of markets. Meanwhile, last-minute shopping and preparations for fireworks increased traffic pressure on Delhi-NCR roads, with congestion reported on several major routes.
Shopping activity began in the markets early in the morning and turned into massive crowds by afternoon. Major markets, including Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar, Karol Bagh and Lajpat Nagar, were packed with shoppers, leaving little room to move. Long queues were seen outside shops. While some people were purchasing home decoration items, others were busy shopping for sweets and gifts.
Long queues of vehicles were reported on major roads connecting Delhi with Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad. Limited parking facilities around markets and increased vehicular movement put the traffic management system to the test. Commuters at several locations had to spend more time than usual reaching their destinations.
Firecracker shopping and final Diwali preparations further increased the rush in markets, adding to the challenges faced by traffic police. Amid the festive celebrations, people are urged to follow traffic rules, avoid improper parking and use public transport wherever possible.
