New Delhi: Dussehra is not merely a festival celebrating the victory of good over evil. It is also an opportunity for self-reflection, understanding human emotions and strengthening the values of love, compassion and brotherhood in society. While people celebrate the festival with joy, it is equally important to remember those silently struggling with loneliness, grief, personal challenges and despair.
Emphasising this message of humanity, Prof. M. D. Ray urged people to embrace sensitivity, introspection and compassion on the occasion of Dussehra. He said the true meaning of a festival lies not only in celebrations but also in bringing happiness, comfort and hope into the lives of others.
Prof. Ray called upon people to overcome the anger that hurts loved ones, abandon the ego that creates distance in relationships and reject the indifference that prevents them from recognising the suffering of others.
He stressed that small gestures of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone's life. A few comforting words for a person in distress, a phone call to someone experiencing loneliness or a reassuring hand extended to someone facing difficult circumstances can offer invaluable emotional support.
According to Prof. Ray, standing beside someone who is suffering is itself an expression of compassion. Making a lonely person feel valued and reminding someone going through a difficult period that they are not alone are powerful acts of humanity.
He noted that even a small gesture can restore hope and help a person feel understood. True kindness, he suggested, is reflected in the willingness to listen, offer support and stand by others when they need it most.
Extending his wishes for a peaceful and auspicious Dussehra, Prof. Ray emphasised that the victory of good must begin with one's own thoughts, behaviour and actions.
He said that when love, empathy and compassion become part of our daily lives, their positive influence naturally reaches others. The festival, therefore, offers a reminder that lasting change in society begins with individual responsibility and a commitment to treating others with dignity and kindness.
