New Delhi: Delhi and its neighbouring areas were blanketed by thick fog early Wednesday, bringing visibility down to near-zero in several parts of the National Capital Region. The poor conditions rattled travel plans for thousands of people, as major transport hubs struggled with delays and cancellations.
Across the city and surrounding districts, visibility dropped sharply in the early hours. At times, it was as low as 50 metres, making it hard for pilots, drivers and commuters alike to see ahead. The India Meteorological Department has forecast that fog could linger for the next couple of days.
At Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, flight operations were hit hard:
Airport authorities advised passengers to check flight statuses before leaving for the airport and to plan extra time for travel.
“Due to prevailing dense fog conditions, flight operations are currently being conducted under CAT III protocols, which may result in delays or cancellations. Our ground teams are on-site and actively
assisting passengers to ensure a smooth travel experience,” the advisory read.
Airlines including IndiGo and SpiceJet issued travel advisories warning flyers about potential disruptions and urging them to stay updated with their carriers.
“Foggy conditions are present across Delhi and several airports in northern India this morning. If reduced visibility conditions persist, flight departures and arrivals may be impacted as the day progresses. We are closely monitoring the situation and are making operational adjustments wherever required to keep journeys moving as smoothly as possible,” the X post of IndiGo read.
The fog wasn't limited to the skies. Rail services too felt the impact:
Forecasters say the dense fog is part of a broader winter pattern affecting northern India. With cold air lingering near the ground and little wind to disperse moisture, fog formation has been widespread. The IMD expects the conditions to persist into the first days of the new year, which could keep travel disruptions in place.
