Greater Noida: Police have registered an FIR against the builder of an under-construction project in Sector 150, Greater Noida, after a 27-year-old software engineer drowned when his car plunged into a water-filled pit at the site in the early hours of Saturday.

What Happened That Night?

At around midnight on Friday, Yuvraj Mehta was driving a Grand Vitara along a service road near the construction site. Investigators said his vehicle broke through a damaged boundary wall and fell into a deep, waterlogged basement pit.

The area was shrouded in thick fog, and it appears Mehta did not see the hazard in time. He climbed onto the roof of his submerged SUV and tried to call for help.

Was Rescue Help Delayed?

According to family members and eyewitnesses, Mehta called his father after the accident to say he was trapped and unable to get out. Despite the alarm, rescue teams struggled to reach him quickly. Dense fog and a lack of proper equipment slowed their efforts.

Police and disaster response units worked through the night, but Mehta’s body was only recovered several hours later. Friends at the scene said rescue teams arrived late and were unable to enter the deep, cold water immediately.

"The rescue teams arrived only by 2.30am and could not even enter the water till 3.20am,” Pankaj, a friend of the deceased said.

Why Is the Builder Being Called Out?

In a complaint to police, Mehta’s father and local residents said the pit had been left open and unprotected for months. They alleged there were no reflectors, barricades, warning signs, or proper boundary walls along the stretch where the accident occurred

Residents said a similar mishap had nearly taken place days earlier when a truck driver almost crashed through the same broken wall. Despite complaints to Noida authorities, no safety fixes were made.

What’s Next in the Case?

The FIR names the builder of the project. Police said the investigation will look into possible negligence and safety lapses. They are also examining whether proper permissions and safeguards were in place at the construction site.

An official from the local police confirmed that the case would move forward as the probe unfolds.

Assistant commissioner of police Hemant Upadhyay, "They had dug a large drain, around six to seven feet wide. Due to poor visibility and high speed, the driver appears to have lost control."
