Ratia: Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Barala has urged young people to stay away from drugs and make sports an integral part of their lives, describing the youth as the custodians of India's culture, civilisation and future.

He said sports contribute not only to physical and mental development but also instil discipline, courage, self-confidence and a sense of dedication towards the nation. According to Barala, sporting activities play a vital role in channelising youthful energy positively while preserving and promoting India's rich cultural heritage.

Subhash Barala Inaugurates National Gatka Championship in Ratia

Barala attended the Sub-Junior and Junior National Gatka Championship 2026 as the chief guest on Saturday at Guru Nanak Defence and Sports Academy in Ratia. The championship has been organised by the Gatka Federation of India, with players from 21 states participating in the national-level competition.

He encouraged the participating athletes and praised the federation's efforts in organising an event that brings together players from different parts of the country.

Describing the participation of athletes from various states as a reflection of India's diversity, cultural unity and sporting spirit, Barala said such events provide an important platform for young talent.

How Can Traditional Sports Help Preserve India's Cultural Heritage?

Barala said Gatka is a traditional sport deeply rooted in India's cultural heritage and customs. Promoting such disciplines helps younger generations connect with their traditions while developing qualities such as discipline, courage, self-defence skills and confidence.

He added that both the Haryana and Central governments were working to promote sports associated with Indian traditions and cultural heritage. He expressed confidence that further efforts would be made to give traditional sporting disciplines wider recognition and encourage more young people to participate in them.

MP Urges Youth to Prioritise Sports, Education and Positive Activities

Barala appealed to young people to prioritise sports, education and constructive activities instead of falling prey to substance abuse.

He said drug addiction affects not only individuals but also their families and society as a whole. It can devastate families and hinder social development. He therefore urged young people to remain aware of the harmful consequences of substance abuse and encourage their peers to stay away from drugs.

According to the MP, sports can provide young people with a positive direction and motivate them to become healthy, disciplined and responsible citizens.

Championship Promotes National Unity and Sporting Spirit

Barala described events such as the national Gatka championship as meaningful initiatives for connecting young people with sports and raising awareness against social evils.

He said traditional disciplines such as Gatka generate positive energy among young people and strengthen their connection with their cultural roots. He expressed confidence that the joint efforts of the Gatka Federation of India and Guru Nanak Defence and Sports Academy would inspire athletes and strengthen the sporting culture in society.

Highlighting the presence of participants from different states, Barala said the venue offered a glimpse of a miniature India. The championship, he added, provides athletes with an opportunity to showcase their abilities while promoting cultural exchange, mutual harmony and national unity.

He thanked the Gatka Federation of India for organising the national competition and appreciated the contributions of Dr Rajendra, Balwinder and other individuals associated with the event.
