Maharashtra: These days the Maharashtra government is working on a decision that can have a direct impact on auto and taxi drivers. We are talking about Marathi language. The government wants the auto-taxi drivers operating in the state to know at least enough Marathi that they can talk to the passengers properly. Its purpose is being said to be that the local people should get convenience in their own language and there should be no problem in conversation.

Is any verification or campaign being conducted?

In this direction, there are preparations to start a kind of “verification and training campaign”. Arrangements are being made for drivers to learn Marathi at the RTO level. Drivers who complete this training will also be given a certificate. That is, it will not be implemented just as a rule but as a process so that drivers get a chance to learn.

The government's plan is not limited to just traditional auto-taxis. Drivers of app-based services like Ola, Uber and Rapido may also come under its purview. Because a large number of people now use these services in cities, the government wants all drivers to follow the same rules.

Is there any time limit for implementing this rule?

As far as time limit is concerned, drivers can be given a fixed time to learn Marathi. According to reports, the deadline of August 15 has come to light. After this, action can also be taken against those who do not follow the rules. However, at present the government does not seem to be in a mood to take direct action.

Earlier there was talk of adopting a tough stance on this issue, but now the government seems to be a little soft. It is being said that it will be implemented in a phased manner. Initially the emphasis will be on awareness and training so that drivers can learn the language without pressure. Only after this any kind of strictness can be taken.

What is the government's thinking behind this decision?

The government believes that this will promote the local language and will also benefit the passengers. But on the other hand, some people are also expressing concern about this. Especially for those drivers who have come from other states and are working here, this rule can become a challenge for them.

What can we see next?

This issue may remain under further discussion in the coming times. If the rule is strictly implemented then protests may also be seen. At present the indications are that the government will try to implement this change gradually so that no one faces sudden problems.
