Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati marked her 70th birthday on Tgursday, with greetings pouring in from across the political spectrum.
Among those who sent public wishes were Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, signalling a rare moment of courtesy in the state’s often combative politics.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took to social media to wish Mayawati good health and a long life. His message was brief but formal, reflecting the tradition of extending greetings on milestone occasions, even to political opponents.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also shared his wishes, congratulating the BSP supremo on her birthday and wishing her well. The gesture stood out given the long-standing rivalry between the SP and BSP, particularly in Uttar Pradesh’s Dalit and backward caste politics.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also extended birthday greetings to Mayawati, wishing her good health and longevity.
Mayawati remains one of the most influential Dalit leaders in the country. A four-time chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, she has shaped state politics for decades. Her birthday is often seen as a moment for supporters to reaffirm loyalty and for rivals to acknowledge her role in public life.
