For generations, farmers in Punjab’s Kandi belt relied mainly on rainfall and rapidly depleting groundwater for irrigation. Due to the rocky and uneven terrain, tube wells were largely ineffective, leaving vast stretches of agricultural land vulnerable to drought and crop failure. Now, for the first time in decades, continuous canal water supply has started reaching the fields of Balachaur, bringing major relief to farmers.
Connected to the Bist Doab Canal, the Kathgarh Lift Irrigation Project is being considered a lifeline for the region. Located on the right bank of the canal in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, the project will provide assured irrigation facilities to nearly 11,500 acres of land across 38 villages that had long suffered from acute water shortages.
Keeping the difficult geographical conditions in mind, the project has been specially designed to lift water nearly 300 feet upwards before distributing it to farms through a 221-kilometre-long pipeline network. The closed pipeline system will prevent water wastage and ensure efficient water management. Areas that were once considered completely deprived of canal irrigation are now expected to witness stable and productive farming.
The project also focuses on sustainable development. A 1300-kilowatt solar power plant has been installed alongside the irrigation system, significantly reducing operational costs. According to the government, the initiative reflects a modern and forward-looking approach towards water management and agricultural sustainability in Punjab.
The impact of the project is expected to be substantial across the region. Canal irrigation coverage in Balachaur’s Kandi belt will now expand from 28,205 acres across 72 villages to nearly 39,705 acres covering 110 villages. For areas that had long been declared “dark zones” due to critically low groundwater levels, the project is being seen as a game-changing development.
Local farmers have welcomed the project with great enthusiasm. A farmer from Balachaur said, “Earlier, we completely depended on rainfall. If rains failed, our crops would be destroyed. Now canal water has reached our fields, giving us confidence and security for farming like never before.”
The Kathgarh Lift Irrigation Project is being viewed as much more than just a government initiative. It is being seen as the beginning of a new chapter for Punjab’s Kandi region — one that promises stability, agricultural growth, better livelihoods, and renewed hope for thousands of farming families who battled water scarcity for decades.
