Chandigarh: Senior AAP Punjab leader and Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Friday launched a strong attack on the BJP, accusing it of weaponising central agencies and misusing institutions like the ED (Enforcement Directorate), CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation), Income Tax Department and Election Commission to intimidate opposition leaders ahead of elections. Citing the nearly 48-hour-long ED raids at multiple locations linked to Moga MLA Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora, Cheema said the agency returned empty-handed without recovering even a penny, once again giving AAP leaders a certificate of ‘Kattar Imaandar’
Senior AAP leader Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora further alleged that the BJP was attempting to engineer defections by luring AAP MLAs with ministerial positions and Rajya Sabha membership. She claimed that Punjab's leaders had refused to succumb to such inducements. Reaffirming her loyalty to AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Dr Arora declared that no amount of raids, intimidation or political pressure could silence her or AAP's women leaders. She asserted that she would continue fighting for Punjab and its people.
Addressing a press conference alongside AAP Punjab Women Wing President and Moga MLA Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora, senior AAP leader and Minister Harpal Singh Cheema alleged that the BJP had developed a pattern of misusing central agencies whenever elections approached in a state. He claimed that the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Income Tax Department and even the Election Commission were being used to intimidate opposition leaders, generate allegations and create media narratives to malign political parties. According to him, the objective was to weaken democratically elected governments and undermine the democratic process.
Praising Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora for her dedicated work as an MLA over the past five years, Harpal Singh Cheema said she had consistently raised and addressed issues concerning women, students, healthcare and public welfare in Punjab. He alleged that instead of recognising her public service, the BJP had subjected her and her family to prolonged harassment through central agencies.
Harpal Singh Cheema alleged that the ED conducted raids lasting nearly 48 hours but failed to recover any incriminating documents or money. He described the entire exercise as politically motivated, claiming that prolonged searches, questioning and pressure on an elected representative and her family amounted to harassment and violated basic human rights.
Harpal Singh Cheema further alleged that the BJP was targeting AAP leaders because of their commitment to Punjab, Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. He claimed that the BJP was also attempting to lure AAP MLAs with offers of ministerial positions, Rajya Sabha membership and other influential posts to engineer defections. Cheema asserted that AAP leaders remained committed to public service and could not be bought through political inducements.
Condemning what he described as the BJP's politics of intimidation and division, Harpal Singh Cheema said the people of Punjab would give a fitting response to every attempt to weaken democracy, destabilise opposition parties and undermine the public mandate.
Meanwhile, AAP Punjab Women Wing President and Moga MLA Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora said the ED conducted raids at several locations connected to her and her family. She stated that her residence, office, hospital and the homes of her parents, brother and relatives were searched. According to Dr Arora, officials continued their searches and questioning for nearly 42 to 48 hours but ultimately returned without recovering a single document or any money.
Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora alleged that the BJP was using central agencies to intimidate opposition leaders and pressure them into joining the party, particularly with the Punjab Assembly elections approaching. She criticised the BJP for targeting women politicians who were effectively working and raising public issues, despite its claims of promoting women's empowerment and protection.
Explaining the nature of the questioning, Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora said officials questioned her about various matters, including her children's mark sheets, family property documents, hospital records, public complaints and information concerning political leaders from different parties. She alleged that the prolonged searches and questioning were deliberately extended to cause mental harassment to her and her family.
Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora stated that she had also been offered political positions, including a ministerial post, but rejected the inducements. She said she entered politics to serve Punjab and the country rather than pursue positions, election tickets or personal ambitions. She reaffirmed that her commitment remained to the people who had placed their trust in her.
Reaffirming her loyalty to AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora said she would stand with both leaders throughout her life. She asserted that no pressure, threat or inducement could force her to compromise her principles or betray the people of Punjab.
Highlighting AAP's commitment to women's political empowerment, Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora said the party currently has 11 women MLAs in the Punjab Assembly, representing the highest number of women MLAs in the state's Assembly history. She said AAP had opened political opportunities for ordinary women and men, enabling them to serve the public and bring about change.
Challenging the alleged attempts to intimidate AAP leaders, Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora said no amount of pressure, harassment or intimidation could weaken her resolve or that of the party's women leaders. She asserted that they were committed to serving the people and would not be frightened into abandoning their responsibilities.
Reaffirming AAP's commitment to Punjab, Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora said the party would continue working towards better education, healthcare, public welfare and overall development of the state. She asserted that raids, threats and political inducements would not shake the party's commitment to the people of Punjab.
