Amritsar: Punjab Police has got a big success in the case of murder of ASI Harjeet Singh while on duty. According to the police, Deepak Singh, an accused involved in the incident, was killed in a police encounter in Amritsar on Saturday night. Deepak Singh was a resident of Mulechak village of Amritsar. Police have recovered a pistol, two magazines and eight cartridges from him. His other companion fled from the spot taking advantage of the darkness. Police are continuously conducting raids in search of him.
According to Amritsar Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill, after the murder of Harjeet Singh, blockades were set up at various places in the city. On Saturday night, the police got information about the activity of the accused. After this, checking was increased at many places including Thanda Road. After around 10 pm, the police signaled two suspects riding a scooter to stop. Police claim that instead of stopping, the suspects started firing and fled from there. At the next checkpoint also they opened fire on the police team. After this the police retaliated.
According to the police, Deepak Singh was shot during the encounter. He was immediately taken to the hospital, but his condition deteriorated on the way. On reaching the hospital, doctors declared him dead. According to the police commissioner, during the encounter the second accused managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness. Several police teams are conducting search operations in the area to nab him.
In the investigation of Harjeet Singh murder case, the police took the help of CCTV footage along with technical input, tower dump analysis, local intelligence and human sources. On the basis of these clues the police reached the accused. Police have also collected information about the vehicle and weapons used in the crime. Now the same technical clues are being taken forward for the arrest of the absconding accused.
During the investigation, the police have pointed out the connection of an alleged handler sitting in Pakistan in the case. According to Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill, a person active abroad had lured the accused with money and a role in the drug trade. Police claim that the accused were asked to target a policeman and make a video of the entire incident to prove their loyalty. According to the police, forensic examination of the mobile phones of the accused will be done to confirm this aspect.
Police are now also investigating Deepak Singh's alleged contacts and possible links with Pakistan-based terror networks. In some reports quoting the police, it has come to light that Deepak was in contact with Pakistan-based terrorist Shahzad Bhatti. Investigating agencies are trying to establish this link through mobile phones, location and other technical evidence. At present, the investigation into the police claim is going on and further action in the case will be based on the evidence.
ASI Harjeet Singh was on duty in the Bhagtanwala grain market area of Amritsar in the early hours of 18 September. According to the police, two assailants riding a motorcycle targeted them. After being shot, he was taken to the hospital, where he died. After the incident, the police started a large-scale investigation. The Punjab government has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 crore to his family, while information about an insurance amount of Rs 1 crore has also come to light from HDFC Bank.
After the killing of an accused, the entire focus of the police is now on reaching his absconding accomplice. The police commissioner has said that teams are working continuously to arrest the accused. Besides, the encounter, recovered weapons and technical evidence are also being investigated. Police say that after forensic examination of mobile phones and other digital evidence, more information can be revealed about the entire conspiracy of the murder and the people behind it.
