Chandigarh: Punjab is witnessing a major political shift after the Bhagwant Mann government introduced the ‘Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Bill 2026’. The strict anti-sacrilege law has received massive public and political support, leading several prominent leaders and hundreds of workers from the Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress to join the Aam Aadmi Party.
The Bhagwant Mann-led government introduced the ‘Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Bill 2026’ with the aim of preventing sacrilege incidents involving Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and ensuring strict punishment for those found guilty. The law is now receiving overwhelming support from the public as well as political circles across Punjab.
Influenced by the implementation of this strict law, several senior leaders and hundreds of workers from the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Congress party left their traditional political parties and formally joined the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday. All the leaders were welcomed into the party by Chief Minister’s OSD Rajbir Singh Ghuman.
The newly joined leaders alleged that previous governments merely politicised the sensitive issue of sacrilege and failed to take strong action against the guilty. They said that by implementing this strict legislation, Bhagwant Mann has demonstrated deep respect and reverence towards Guru Sahib.
The leaders further stated that the new law would create fear among anti-social elements attempting to commit sacrilege. According to them, the legislation will play an important role in maintaining Punjab’s religious harmony, peace, and communal brotherhood.
OSD Rajbir Singh Ghuman assured all the newly inducted leaders and workers that they would receive complete respect and recognition within the Aam Aadmi Party. He said the party welcomes every individual committed to Punjab’s peace, development, and social harmony.
The prominent leaders who joined the party include Kitu Grewal, former Women President Punjab Congress and Member of Women and Child Welfare (Parliament Election In-charge Jammu & Kashmir); Satpal Singh, former Chairman PUNGRAIN; Kamaldeep Singh Rana Warka, General Secretary Punjab Congress; Samandeep Kaur, President Women Cell Congress Malout; Hardev Singh, former Chairman Block Samiti (B.C. Wing In-charge Attari); Charanjeet Kaur, Block Samiti Member; Gurmel Singh, General Secretary Rural and candidate for Zila Parishad Talwandi Sabo; Hardev Singh, former Block Samiti Member and former Sarpanch; Jaskaran Singh Jathwal, former General Secretary Congress; Vashan Singh; and Surjit Singh, former Sarpanch of Village Gurunanakpura, Beas.
The large-scale joining has intensified political discussions across Punjab. Political observers believe that the anti-sacrilege law is helping AAP strengthen its position in the state, while opposition parties are facing growing pressure over their past handling of sacrilege-related incidents.
