Punjab: Sangrur police on Thursday arrested the youth who is accused of killing an Indian girl in Canada, then fleeing to India and later pressuring her to withdraw the case by threatening her family. The accused was identified as Manpreet Singh, a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. According to police, he had killed 27-year-old Amanpreet Kaur in Toronto in October and returned to India soon after.
Amanpreet was the daughter of Inderjeet Singh, a resident of the Prem Basti area of Sangrur. She lived in a rented flat in the East York area of Canada and worked as a personal support worker in a hospital. Her family says that she was a hard-working and calm girl, who was serious about her future.
According to the police, Manpreet Singh used to drive a taxi and Amanpreet used his taxi to go to work every day. During this time, Manpreet started talking about marriage with her. Amanpreet had clearly refused, but even after this he kept applying pressure.
On October 21, when Amanpreet's phone got switched off and she could not be contacted, the family panicked. Elder sister Gursimran Kaur informed the Canadian Police. After some time, police said that Amanpreet's body was found near Niagara Falls in Ontario. In the investigation, Manpreet was named the main accused, who had gone to India by then.
Police say that Manpreet started sending messages to Gursimran on social media as soon as he reached India. He threatened to kill the entire family and said that if the case was not withdrawn, the consequences would be dire. It is alleged that he also went to the family house with weapons.
Due to fear, the family installed CCTV cameras outside the house. Despite this, the accused came there twice in the night, got photographed in front of the cameras, and sent the pictures to the family. According to the police, he also threatened to spread edited objectionable pictures of Amanpreet and later posted such pictures on a fake Instagram account.
On the complaint of the family, a case was registered in the cybercrime police station on January 14. Manpreet was arrested the next day. At present he is being interrogated, and the police are also in touch with Canadian agencies.
