Chandigarh: The Punjab bandh started on Thursday morning on the call of Qaumi Insaaf Morcha demanding the release of captive Singhs in Punjab. The effect of this proposed bandh from 7 am to 2 pm is visible on markets, private educational institutions and public transport in many districts. The protesters are protesting in support of their demands by staging dharnas at various places.
Protestors belonging to Qaumi Insaaf Morcha staged a sit-in at Guru Nanak Mission Chowk in Jalandhar, due to which traffic was affected. People had to face problems like jams and changes in routes on some major routes of the city. The situation is being monitored by the police and administration.
The effect of the bandh was clearly visible on public transport also. There are reports of bus movement being affected at many bus stands including Hoshiarpur. Private schools remained closed, while some government schools remained open, although the number of students appeared to be lower than usual. The impact of the bandh was different in different districts according to local conditions.
Qaumi Insaaf Morcha has long been demanding the release of Sikh prisoners, whom the organisation calls 'Bandi Singh'. The Morcha says that some prisoners have completed their sentence or are eligible for release. Other demands of the protesters include the issue of granting parole to Jagtar Singh Hawara and action on the cases registered after the recent protests.
Hospitals, medical stores, ambulances and other essential emergency services have been exempted during the bandh. People undertaking essential journeys have also been advised to leave after seeing the local situation. The organisers have also talked about relaxation for passengers going to the airport and other essential journeys.
People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to get information about the traffic and transport situation in their area before leaving. Where there is a road jam or protest, it would be better to adopt an alternative route as per the instructions of the police. Patients and people leaving for important work should travel with extra time.
