Vrindvan: Tourist buses parked along the roadside on the Mathura-Vrindavan route pose a threat to the lives of commuters. These buses, parked in blatant disregard of traffic rules, could trigger a major accident at any moment. Surprisingly, even though designated parking facilities for pilgrim buses exist at several locations in this holy city, drivers continue to use the roads themselves as parking spots. This not only disrupts traffic flow but also increases the risk of accidents.
On September 14, a vegetable vendor riding a scooter met a tragic end after being struck by a tourist bus that was reversing from its roadside parking spot. Following the incident, an enraged crowd beat up the bus driver and blocked the Mathura road; the police managed to clear the blockade only after considerable effort. Senior police officials who visited the scene after the accident instructed their subordinates to prevent tourist buses and other vehicles from parking along the roadside. Despite this, there appears to be no significant change in the situation.
A large number of pilgrims from various states across the country visit Vrindavan to seek blessings from Lord Banke Bihari, often traveling in tourist buses. Due to the arbitrary behavior of bus drivers, these buses are frequently parked on the roadside instead of in designated parking areas. This causes inconvenience to two-wheeler riders and other commuters. Roadside parking often obstructs the view of the road ahead for vehicles approaching from behind, creating a constant risk of accidents.
What makes the situation particularly serious is that a police outpost and the RTO office are located in the very area where traffic rules are being openly flouted. Furthermore, district officials frequently commute along this route. Despite this, the lack of effective action against roadside parking of tourist buses raises questions about the functioning of the responsible departments. It is a matter of concern for local residents that, despite directives issued by officials following a fatal accident, the situation remains unchanged. It remains to be seen whether the responsible department will take action against buses illegally parked along the roadside to streamline traffic, or if they will wait for another major accident to occur.
