Muzaffarnagar: Advocates in Muzaffarnagar took to the streets in a show of solidarity, calling for stronger safeguards against attacks, threats and harassment targeting members of the legal profession. Through a foot march, the lawyers urged the Uttar Pradesh government to implement the Advocate Protection Act to ensure their safety, dignity and professional rights.
The march highlighted growing concerns among members of the legal community over incidents of violence and intimidation that, they said, can interfere with their ability to perform their duties.
During the march, participating advocates stressed that lawyers are an integral part of the justice system. They play a crucial role in helping citizens seek justice and protecting their constitutional rights.
However, incidents of assault, threats and harassment against advocates remain a serious concern, according to the participants. Such incidents not only put lawyers' personal safety at risk but can also create obstacles in the discharge of their professional responsibilities.
The advocates maintained that specific legal safeguards are necessary to enable them to work without fear or undue pressure.
The lawyers called on the Uttar Pradesh government to introduce the Advocate Protection Act at the earliest. They said a dedicated legal framework could help ensure effective action against violence, intimidation and harassment directed at advocates.
They also emphasised that lawyers entrusted with the responsibility of securing justice must themselves have a safe working environment. If advocates feel threatened while carrying out their duties, the consequences could extend beyond the legal profession and affect the wider judicial process.
The foot march was organised to draw the attention of the state government and local administration to the security challenges faced by advocates. It also aimed to strengthen unity within the legal fraternity and raise public awareness about the need to protect lawyers.
Participants clarified that the campaign was not directed against any individual, institution or organisation. Instead, they described it as a collective effort to safeguard the honour, security and rights of advocates.
The advocates said a strong justice system depends on lawyers being able to fulfil their responsibilities in a secure and fear-free atmosphere. They urged the government to treat the issue as a priority and take concrete steps towards implementing the proposed legislation.
The march in Muzaffarnagar has brought renewed attention to the demand for legal protection for advocates, with participants appealing to the Uttar Pradesh government to take prompt action on the issue.
