Sambhal: Ahead of the Holi festival, authorities in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal have covered around 10 mosques, including the historic Shahi Jama Masjid, with large tarpaulin sheets, citing precautionary measures to maintain communal harmony, according to officials.

What is the reason for covering mosques?

According to the district officials, the step was taken to prevent colour from being thrown on religious structures during Holi processions passing through these routes.

The officials said that two separate processions are scheduled to pass in front of the Jama Masjid, where similar incidents in previous years had reportedly led to tensions.

How many mosques are covered?

Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar Vishnoi said that more than 10 mosques were covered with tarpaulin sheets to prevent colour from being thrown on them and to ensure that no community’s sentiments are hurt.

According to the administration, tarpaulin sheets have been installed on mosque exteriors, and protective coating has been applied at some locations to prevent staining from colours.

The SP said that heavy police deployment has been made across the district city, and sensitive areas are being inspected,  with additional surveillance in areas.

What did the official say?

District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya said that the decision was taken with the consent of mosque caretakers during a peace committee meeting.

The district Magistrate said that 27 teams have been constituted to oversee security arrangements. More than 1,000 people have been bound down and strict vigil is being maintained.

He further stated that, as per local practice, the municipal body arranges protective coverings for structures located along major procession routes.

Authorities added that any other religious site seeking similar protection would be permitted to take preventive measures.

What is the objective of this?

According to the officials, the main objective is to ensure that the Holi festival is celebrated peacefully and disputes are avoided.

Earlier, the administration had implemented similar security arrangements during recent Rang Ekadashi observances, with police maintaining heightened vigilance across the district.
