Lucknow: Before Rakshabandhan, Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh had made a big announcement for women. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed that from the night of 27th August to the night of 28th August, women will be able to travel free of cost along with one colleague in the buses of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). The government says that the purpose of this arrangement is to help women reach their parents' homes and families in a safe and convenient manner during the festival.

What are the special arrangements for women on Rakshabandhan?

On the occasion of Rakshabandhan, a large number of women travel to other cities and villages to meet their brothers. Keeping this in view, the government has decided to provide the facility of free bus travel this time also. The special thing is that along with the female passenger, one companion will also be allowed to travel without fare. This facility will start from the night of 27th August and continue till the night of 28th August.

What instructions were given for the safety of women?

The chief minister did not limit his talk only to the provision of free travel. He has instructed the transport department, police and local administration to work in coordination so that women do not face any problem on the way during the festival. It has also been asked to maintain better traffic system on major routes and keep anti-Romeo squad active for women's safety.

Will bus drivers also be monitored?

Instructions have also been given to keep a special eye on bus drivers regarding the safety of passengers. The chief minister made it clear that no driver should be allowed to drive the bus while intoxicated. Along with verification of private bus drivers, instructions have also been given to verify auto and taxi drivers. The government's emphasis is on ensuring that public transport remains safe for women during the festival.

Are there preparations for additional buses also?

During Rakshabandhan, the number of passengers increases significantly compared to normal days. Keeping this in view, preparations are already being made to strengthen the transport system. UPSRTC plans to run additional bus services and increase the number of buses on high-congestion routes. Due to this, women availing the facility of free travel do not have to face shortage of buses or excessive crowding.

CM Yogi also gave instructions regarding waterlogging and floods?

The chief minister also reviewed the waterlogging and flood situation in the state during the meeting. He enquired about the reasons for waterlogging in many divisions and districts and gave instructions to identify low-lying areas and install additional pumping stations as per the need. If the flow of water is obstructed due to silt and garbage in the drains, it has been asked to get it cleaned immediately.

Keeping an eye on 19 flood affected districts also?

The situation of 19 flood affected districts of the state was also reviewed. The chief minister took information about the relief work and the current situation from the concerned district magistrates. All district magistrates have been instructed to remain alert and keep the district control room continuously active. The headquarters level has also been asked to monitor the situation round the clock.

Why is this decision important?

The arrangement of providing free bus travel facility to women on Rakshabandhan has been a part of the old initiative of the Yogi government. In 2025 also, women and their one companion were given the facility of free travel. This year, the government has also emphasised security, driver verification and additional transportation arrangements along with free travel so that the travel of women during the festival is easy and safe.
