UP Government Prohibits Employee Strikes for Six Months Under ESMA

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has banned employee strikes and demonstrations for six months under the Uttar Pradesh Essential Services Maintenance Act. A notification has been issued by the state governemnt in this regard. According to the order, strikes will be prohibited in public services related to state affairs. 

What did the UP government say?

The Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), banning strikes by government employees in all state government departments, corporations, and authorities for a period of six months. 

Now, employees in the state will not be able to go on protest for the next six months. This order was issued by the Principal Secretary, Appointments and Personnel, M. Devaraj. The governemnt has taken this decision to ensure uninterrupted administrative work and public services. 

The ban will also apply to corporations and local authorities controlled by the state government. 

Is this the first time?

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government had banned strikes on all roadways services for the six months. The decision was taken in the public interest and to ensure the smooth functioning of essential services. An order issued by Additional Chief Secretary of Transport, Archana Agarwal, stated that strikes would be completely prohibited on all roadways services for the next six months.
