Muzaffarnagar: A controversy involving Uttar Pradesh Minister of State Kapil Dev Agarwal and Samajwadi Party leader Rakesh Sharma during a programme marking the birth anniversary of Lord Valmiki has triggered resentment within the Valmiki community. Following the circulation of a video allegedly showing a scuffle over a microphone, community members on Tuesday called Sharma’s conduct inappropriate and demanded a public apology.

Community Leaders Condemn the Incident

Rohil Valmiki, a leader of the Valmiki community, told the media that the procession organised to celebrate Lord Valmiki’s birth anniversary was taken out with considerable enthusiasm and grandeur. He appreciated the contribution of Minister Kapil Dev Agarwal, stating that the minister’s efforts had helped make the event more elaborate and successful.

According to Rohil Valmiki, officials had raised objections to playing DJ music during the procession. However, permission was reportedly granted after the minister intervened.

Why Has the Microphone Dispute Sparked Anger?

Reacting to the alleged altercation, Rohil Valmiki said the behaviour towards Minister Kapil Dev Agarwal was inappropriate and unbecoming of a public event. He stressed that political leaders should maintain decorum and mutual respect during public gatherings.

He also urged Rakesh Sharma to clarify his position before the community and issue a public apology over the incident.

Other Leaders Call for Mutual Respect

Valmiki community leader Sunny Silelan also condemned the episode, emphasising that religious and social gatherings should be conducted in an atmosphere of harmony and mutual respect. He joined the demand for Sharma to apologise to members of the community.

Dozens of community representatives were present at the Town Hall ground during the gathering, where the incident and the demand for an apology were discussed.

SP Leader Offers His Explanation

Earlier, Rakesh Sharma had responded to the viral video by claiming that people at the programme were questioning the authorities about promises made last year. According to Sharma, the questions concerned renaming Novelty Crossing after Maharishi Valmiki and installing a statue in his honour.

The controversy has since drawn attention to the disagreement surrounding the programme, with community leaders demanding an apology while Sharma has offered his account of the circumstances behind the incident.
