New Delhi: The adoption of AI in India is accelerating rapidly. According to a new study by OpenAI, however, its usage is currently concentrated in only a few specific regions of the country. Approximately 50 percent of ChatGPT users in India hail from the top 10 cities. This figure represents 10 percent of the country's total population. The Delhi-NCR region accounts for the highest number of ChatGPT users. OpenAI revealed this information in its inaugural report analyzing the AI 'capability gap' in India.

How Many Active Users In India?

According to the report, India stands as one of the world's most advanced AI markets—particularly in the domains of coding, data analysis, and complex reasoning. The rate of adoption for OpenAI's tools in India's major cities is three times higher than in other nations such as the US, the UK, Brazil, and Germany. The report indicates that ChatGPT boasts over 100 million weekly active users in India, making it one of the company's largest markets. OpenAI's findings also demonstrate that, despite claims portraying AI as an 'equalizer,' the pattern of technology adoption is not geographically uniform. In other words, it is being utilized for different purposes across different regions.

Is There Similar Usage Patterns for Claude?

This disparity in AI adoption across different regions is not limited solely to ChatGPT. Earlier this year, a report by Anthropic revealed that the usage of Claude is significantly higher in high-income nations—and within the US itself—in areas with a high concentration of 'knowledge workers.' Furthermore, its application tends to be concentrated within specific types of tasks and professions. The critical question now is: how quickly can the benefits of AI extend beyond early adopters and major metropolitan areas to reach the general public?

Is This Limited to Specific Users and Regions?

Last year, major AI companies—such as Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity—competed to offer millions of users in India extended periods of free access to their premium AI services. Despite these efforts, according to an OpenAI report, the adoption of AI remains limited to specific user segments and regions. To address the capacity gap in AI usage within India, OpenAI stated that it would focus on factors such as language, affordability, and infrastructure.

What is Usage for Coding in These Cities?

OpenAI’s AI coding assistant, Codex, was launched in India in February 2026. Within just two weeks of its launch, its usage surged fourfold. OpenAI noted that there is a ninefold disparity in Codex usage across different regions of India. The use of this coding tool is currently confined to a few specific cities, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, and Chennai.

Where and for What Purposes is it Being Used?

According to the report, India's eastern states—such as Assam, Odisha, Manipur, Tripura, and Chhattisgarh—utilize ChatGPT more extensively for education and learning purposes compared to other parts of the country. The report highlights that in Assam, 22 percent of all messages sent to ChatGPT are related to education and learning.

Which States Ask Questions About Health?

In regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Kerala, a higher volume of queries directed at ChatGPT pertains to health and wellness. For users in Jammu and Kashmir, approximately one out of every ten messages sent to ChatGPT is related to health.
