New Delhi: After the controversy over the moderation action taken on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Facebook video, social media company Meta has made important changes in its content moderation system. The company has acknowledged that the action taken in the matter in question was a mistake and has made its review process for content related to high-profile or VIP accounts more stringent to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future. This decision has come after the government of India sought clarification and raised objections on the matter.
Some time ago, a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was removed from Facebook for a limited time or its reach was affected. In the video, the Prime Minister was talking about strict action against paper leaks in public examinations. After the matter came to light, questions were raised at the political and administrative level. The central government sought a response from Meta and wanted to know why such action was taken on the content shared from the Prime Minister's official account.
After an internal review of the matter, Meta admitted that this situation occurred due to a technical or human error during content moderation. The company regretted the incident and assured that additional security measures are being incorporated into the moderation process to prevent such errors in the future. Senior officials of Meta have also assured to provide detailed clarification to the agencies concerned.
Meta has now decided to implement an additional review system for high-profile accounts. Under the new protocol, if the need to take action is felt on the content of any major political leader, government institution or other prominent public figure, then it will first be reviewed separately at a senior level. Only after this will a decision be taken to remove, limit or take other action on any post. The company believes that this will reduce the possibility of accidental action on important public messages.
Over the past few years, Meta, X and other social media companies have faced constant criticism over their content moderation systems. In several cases, users alleged that automated systems miscalculated the rules and removed or limited the reach of even legitimate posts. Experts believe that along with artificial intelligence based moderation systems, human review is equally important, especially when the matter is related to public importance or sensitive topics.
Meta has not clarified whether the new review system will be applicable only in India or it will also be adopted on high-profile accounts around the world. However, the company says that its aim is to make the moderation process more accurate, transparent and trustworthy. Experts believe that if the additional review system proves effective, it could reduce the number of cases of accidental action taken on content of important public figures. At the same time, it must also be ensured that the rules are applied fairly and equally to all users so that both transparency and credibility are maintained.
