New Delhi: Popular messaging app Telegram has once again become available in India on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. It was temporarily removed from both platforms following the central government's directive in June. Now it has been reinstated in a phased manner and the app is available for download again for most of the users.

Why was Telegram removed in India?

In June, the central government had directed the removal of Telegram from the App Store under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act (IT Act). The government feared that some Telegram channels could be used for sensitive and illegal activities. This provision empowers the government to limit access to online content in matters related to national security, public order and sovereignty of the country.

When and how did Telegram return?

Re-listing on Telegram was started from June 23 after the completion of NEET-UG re-exam. The app was first made available on Google Play Store, after which it was also reinstated on Apple App Store. Gradually the app was made available to all users.

What was the connection with NEET-UG re-exam?

Officials feared that question papers or other confidential material related to NEET-UG re-exam could be shared through Telegram channels. For this reason, it was decided to temporarily remove the app until the examination process is completed.

What is Telegram and how is it used?

Telegram is a cloud-based instant messaging platform, which is used to send messages, share photos-videos, create large groups and run channels. It was started by Pavel Durov in the year 2013. Millions of people around the world use it for personal and business communication.

Why have questions been raised on Telegram before?

Telegram has been accused many times in the past that some of its channels and groups are used for cybercrime, hacking, fraud and other illegal activities. But along with this, millions of people also use Telegram for general conversation, studies, business and sharing information.

What has changed for users now?

After the restoration of the app, Android and iPhone users can download and update Telegram again. It is also being made available in a phased manner for those users who are not able to see it on the App Store yet.
