New Delhi: Tesla has taken electric car technology in a new direction. The car got a lot of attention after a demo showed it lifting off the ground, spinning in the air and landing safely using a rocket-style propulsion system.

The new Roadster was shown to the public on October 15 2026, at an event in Texas. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, led the presentation. This car was built using tech from SpaceX. It uses motors along with special thrusters that help control its movement when it’s briefly in the air.

People are asking: how can a car meant for roads use tech like that in a spaceship? The answer is simple. It uses compressed gas, high-pressure storage tanks and basic physics. These things work together to let the car fly for moments.

How Does Tesla Roadster's Rocket Technology Work?

The Roadsters thruster system works by letting out gas that’s squeezed into a tight space. This gas shoots out through nozzles. As it rushes out, it pushes the vehicle in the direction. That helps the car move or turn in space.

This idea comes from Newton’s law. It says that for every push there’s a push back the other way. That’s how the thrusters work.

It’s different from rocket engines. Those burn fuel to make gas that blasts out. The Roadster doesn’t do that. It just uses gas that’s already stored under pressure. No burning, just release.

The nozzles are placed in different directions. If they point to the back, they push the car forward. If they point down, they lift the car up. Small, careful bursts can also help the car spin or land gently. Everything is controlled so the vehicle moves the way it’s meant to.

What Is the Massive Cylinder Inside the Tesla Roadster?

The Roadsters technology is its Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel, commonly called COPV.

These special tanks are made to hold gas at high pressure while staying relatively light. They use composite materials like carbon fiber wrap to survive the pressure inside.

The Roadster uses compressed gas that is stored in pressure vessels. These vessels connect to a network of pipes, valves and thruster nozzles.

When the valves on the COPV open the gas rushes through the pipes. Leaves the nozzles at high speed.

That high speed gas creates the force needed for the Roadsters movements.

How Can the Car Lift Off the Ground?

The Roadsters rocket setup contains engines to help the car move. When the engines at the release gas that has been compressed tightly the force from that push lifts the car upward.

The system must be very careful about how push car gets, which direction the car pushes and when the car pushes. Even a tiny difference between the engines can make the car wobble or fall.

During the show, the car performed moves in the air such as spinning and returning to the ground. The show also used methods to control the car, demonstrating how electric car technology can work with ideas from aircraft and rockets.

These moves are not the same as flying. Being able to jump or lift off for a moment does not mean car can fly like a plane or a helicopter.

Tesla Roadster Variants and Expected Performance

  •  Performance: Focuses on high-performance electric driving.
  • Thrust: Adds a rocket-inspired compressed-gas system to enhance performance.

  • Rocket: Features the most ambitious proposed thruster configuration, designed for specialised airborne manoeuvres.

Tesla says the Roadster can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than one second and can reach a top speed of more than 230 miles, per hour. Those are Tesla’s claims. The real production numbers and independent tests have not yet been shown.

The Rocket configuration has drawn a lot of attention because it is said to lift off the ground. Still, how the Rocket will be used in practice, the safety rules the Rocket must meet, and the legal approval the Rocket needs are still questions.

When Will the New Tesla Roadster Launch?

The redesigned Roadster was recently shown to the public. Roadster is not yet a production car that anyone can buy.

Tesla plans to begin production of the Roadster in 2028. Roadster project has had delays since the new Roadster was first announced in 2017.

Details such as the price, delivery dates and exact production specs are still not confirmed. You might wonder about the difference, between the Roadster made for roads and the Roadster versions built for demonstrations.

Is Tesla Roadster Really a Flying Car?

A flying vehicle must have lift, good stability, control over direction and the ability to land safely. It also needs to follow safety rules and regulations before it can be used in areas.

Tesla’s show looked at how compressed-gas thrusters might work in a car. But how long the vehicle can stay in the air, what limits it has in use, and how reliable the system will be over time still need to be tested. This is an experiment mixing electric cars with aerospace ideas.

Rocket like features turn into car innovations or stay as impressive but limited demos, depending on what the final production model looks like and what future testing shows.
