New Delhi: The video of an American woman regarding low prices of medicines in India is becoming increasingly viral on social media. A woman named Liz living in India claimed that the same medicine for which one has to pay about 900 dollars (about 85 thousand rupees) in America is available in India for between 35 to 300 rupees. After this comparison she raised questions on the American health system.
In the video, Liz told that her aunt is suffering from blood cancer and she has to take a special medicine regularly. According to her, the price of one tablet of this medicine in America is around 900 dollars. Whereas in India its generic option is available between Rs 35 to Rs 300. Such a huge difference surprised her.
Liz said that in India, essential medicines are within the reach of common people, whereas in America, the cost of treatment and medicines becomes a big problem for many people. She said in the video that in America people are charged more than necessary for medicines and this situation is worrying.
After the video went viral, thousands of people gave their opinion on social media. Many users criticized the expensive health care services in America. Some people wrote that the availability of generic medicines in India is a big relief for patients. Some users jokingly said that if American citizens come to India to buy medicines, they can save money even after adding the travel expenses.
India is counted among the leading countries of the world in terms of production of medicines. A large number of generic medicines are manufactured here, due to which their prices remain relatively low. This is the reason why many foreign patients also turn to India for treatment. However, the price of any medicine may vary according to its brand, company and availability. Experts say that no medicine should be taken without doctor's advice and medicines should be purchased only from authorised medical stores.
