Bengaluru: Bengaluru is seen as a major IT and startup hub of the country. There are plenty of job and career opportunities here, but the cost of living in the city is also not low. A person earning Rs 12 lakh annually may appear to be well-paid on paper, but when expenses for rent, transport, food and social life are added, the amount left at the end of the month may be much less than expected. Product manager and content creator Shivank Goyal has talked about this issue in his Instagram video.
According to Shivank Goyal, if a person's monthly income is less than Rs 1 lakh, then he should understand the expenses well before coming to Bengaluru. He says that rent and food expenses alone do not spoil the budget. Going out with friends, drinking coffee, participating in any activity or spending on your hobbies also adds to the monthly expenses.
The first problem that people who come to the city for jobs face is the problem of accommodation. Renting a house in a good area can have a big impact on the budget. Apart from this, the security deposit can also ask for a huge lump sum amount. Shivank gave the example of a deposit of around Rs 2 lakh in his video. It is not easy for a person starting a job in a new city to raise this much amount in advance.
Bengaluru's traffic is often discussed. Shivank said that even for a distance of about 5 kilometers, the cab fare can sometimes reach Rs 600. This means that even in short distance journeys the expenses may be high. It also takes a lot of time due to traffic. This is why while choosing the distance from office to home, it is important to keep in mind the daily commuting expenses along with the rent.
Things like cafes, restaurants, events and paid hobbies are common in the city lifestyle. Each of these expenses may seem small when seen separately, but if they happen several times a month, the total amount adds up to a significant amount. Shivank says that in Bengaluru, some kind of expenditure starts as soon as one leaves the house.
Giving the example of Cubbon Park, Shivank said that just because the entry of a place is free does not mean that there will be no cost to reach there. If a person lives in another part of the city then commuting may cost a lot of money and time. In such a situation, it is not enough to look at the ticket or entry fee alone when determining the actual cost of an activity.
Different reactions have emerged on social media regarding Shivank's video. Some people admitted that rent, transport and eating out expenses can take up a large portion of the salary. At the same time, some people say that low budget options are also available in Bengaluru. Area of residence, distance from office, lifestyle and spending habits can significantly change a person's monthly budget.
An annual salary of Rs 12 lakh sounds like a huge amount, but to understand the real situation, it is important to see how much money comes into hand after taxes and other deductions and how much of it is spent. The amount left after taking out rent, deposits, food, travel and personal expenses gives a picture of a person's real financial condition. This is why while choosing a job, it is important to keep in mind not only the package but also the cost of the city and your saving capacity.
