New Delhi: A camel beauty contest in Oman has sparked controversy after 20 camels were disqualified for allegedly receiving cosmetic treatments such as Botox and lip fillers to enhance their appearance. Veterinary inspectors discovered the banned procedures during routine checks at the 2026 Camel Beauty Show Festival held in Al Musannah.

What were camels injected?

According to reports, the camels had been given injections including Botox, hyaluronic acid fillers and silicone to alter features such as their lips, noses and humps. These cosmetic enhancements are strictly prohibited under the competition’s rules.

What did the officials say?

Officials said the procedures were used to make the camels appear more attractive to judges. Camel beauty contests evaluate animals based on physical traits such as shiny coats, long necks, large lips, and well-shaped humps.

Were action taken against the owners?

Festival organisers condemned the manipulation and said strict action would be taken against owners who try to tamper with the animals’ natural features. Veterinary screenings and detailed examinations are carried out to ensure fair competition.

What is this contest?

Camel beauty contests are a major cultural event in many Gulf countries and often involve large prize money and prestige for breeders. Winning camels can significantly increase in value, which is why some owners attempt illegal methods to improve their chances.

Animal welfare groups have criticised the use of cosmetic procedures on camels, warning that such treatments can cause pain, infections and other health problems.

The incident has once again raised questions about animal welfare and stricter monitoring in these popular but controversial contests.
