Pithoragarh: The snow on Om Parvat, which is at an altitude of 6,000 feet in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand has melted again. The natural Om formation here is now unclear. In 2024, the snow on Om Parvat also disappeared completely for a period hiding the Om shape.

What did the experts say?

Experts and environmentalists have shown worry about this event pointing to reasons like snowfall, higher temperatures, vehicle pollution and climate change. So, is the Himalayas signaling something significant by the disappearance of snow from Om Parvat this time too?

Where is Om Parvat located?

Om Parvat, which is at an altitude of 6,000 meters is one of the most special peaks in the Himalayas, where the freezing of snow naturally creates the shape of "Om." This shape makes this mountain unique for reasons and for tourism. However the repeated disappearance of snow brings up questions. Everyone is curious if this is because of climate change or if higher temperatures, less snowfall, human actions and pressure on the environment in the Himalayan area are the main causes. In 2024, when a similar situation happened experts were worried connecting it to climate change and higher temperatures. However, after subsequent snowfall, the Om shape became visible again.

What are the effects of changes?

Could the repeated disappearance of snow from Om Parvat be a sign of changes in the environment? Experts think that winter snowfall and snowfall before the monsoon have gone down in the parts of the Himalayas in recent years. Also scientists say that global warming is having an effect on the mountains. With increasing altitude, the impact of sunlight and radiation on the mountains increases, making seasonal snow less likely to persist.

Will it affect the water sources?

However it would not be correct to say this event is proof of global warming. Local weather, temperature, levels of snowfall and other natural things could also be the cause. However, given the concerns of experts, scientific study of this change is important. The question is, if the snow on the mountains keeps disappearing at this speed it could affect not only the look of the mountain but also the water sources in the Himalayas and the whole ecosystem, in the future.
