Washington: A video of US Second Lady Usha Vance nearly falling from an airplane staircase, while holding a newborn in her arms, is going viral on social media. While accompanying US Vice President J.D. Vance on a campaign trip to Alaska on Monday, Second Lady Usha Vance narrowly escaped a fall while holding her nine-week-old son, Alec.

After disembarking from the Vice President's helicopter at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Vance was descending the stairs as the family prepared to board a flight to Alaska. She was carrying Alec in her arms and a large brown backpack on her back when she tripped. Usha stumbled forward but quickly caught herself and kept the baby safe.

Usha Vance had a narrow escape on the plane stairs

The video shows that after escaping the fall, she breathed a sigh of relief, smiled, and continued walking. A few seconds later, JD Vance followed her with his four-year-old daughter, Mirabelle. This moment was captured on video and soon went viral on social media. The surprising thing was that when Usha Vance stumbled, not a single security guard present there came forward to help her. Whereas it is a natural human habit that if someone in front of us starts falling, then suddenly the hands automatically go up in an attempt to save him.

When Usha stumbled, uniformed security personnel were standing on the tarmac, but they did not come forward to help her. This has sparked debate online. Some users questioned why no one came forward to help her while she was descending the stairs, carrying a newborn baby and a large bag. One woman wrote on Instagram, "Didn't any of the people or officers standing there have the desire or the feeling to help? They stood there motionless, like stones! This is too much!"

Another user questioned why Vice President JD Vance, who was walking behind Usha, didn't take her bag. "One would think the Vice President, who was walking right behind her, would take the heavy bag so she wouldn't have to climb the stairs alone with the child," the user wrote.

Traveling with a 9 Week Old Baby

The Vance family was traveling to Alaska to campaign for JD Vance ahead of the November 3 election. The trip included a seven-and-a-half-hour flight with their nine-week-old son. Explaining why Usha and two of their four children were coming with him, Vance jokingly told reporters, "This is Usha's 50th state, which is why we're bringing the nine-week-old on a 7.5-hour flight to Alaska." He further added that if he looked "tired and stressed" during the speech, there was a simple reason behind it.

Usha has also spoken publicly about the challenges of raising a newborn. In a recent interview, she said, "When you're dealing with the things any parent of a newborn faces, wondering if people are watching you is a different experience." She said that people have generally been very supportive of the family. "But people have been really wonderful in this case," she said. "He has a Secret Service team with him. None of our newborns have had such security before."
